About Old Station

Old Station is a small, unincorporated community in northeastern Shasta County, located along Highway 44, near the boundary with Lassen County. It lies at the base of Lassen Volcanic National Park and serves as a gateway to some of Northern California’s most stunning natural features.

The community's name comes from a stagecoach stop that once operated in the area in the late 1800s. It was literally an “old station” along a travel route between the Sacramento Valley and northeastern California. Early settlers and travelers used it as a rest point before tackling the rugged terrain of the Lassen region.

With the creation of Lassen Volcanic National Park in 1916 and the expansion of U.S. highways, Old Station evolved into a recreational and tourism-based outpost, offering access to fishing, hiking, camping, and volcanic features like Subway Cave, a popular lava tube.

Today, Old Station remains small but plays an important role in the region’s eco-tourism, with campgrounds, lodges, and trail access drawing visitors from all over California and beyond.
