Igo is a small, historic, unincorporated community in western Shasta County, located southwest of Redding. Founded during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s, Igo grew as a mining town and later transitioned to ranching and small-scale agriculture.
The town was part of the placer mining boom that swept through the foothills, with miners settling in the area in search of gold along nearby streams and gulches. Igo retained a post office, general store, and strong sense of local identity even as larger towns grew around it.
Today, Igo is a quiet rural community known for its tight-knit population, scenic countryside, and historical charm. It also serves as the site of the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, a state-operated resting place for military veterans and their families.
Igo continues to attract residents and visitors looking for a slower pace of life, outdoor space, and a connection to California’s frontier past.
