About French Gulch
French Gulch is one of Shasta County’s most historic communities, located in the western foothills of the Trinity Mountains. Founded in 1849 during the California Gold Rush, it quickly became one of the region’s most productive mining towns, attracting prospectors—many of them French—from across the U.S. and Europe.
At its peak, French Gulch boasted hotels, saloons, stores, and a lively population driven by the search for gold. The nearby Washington Mine and others remained active for decades. Despite its decline as the gold rush faded, the town has maintained much of its 19th-century charm and historical architecture.
Today, French Gulch is a quiet, close-knit community with deep roots in California’s mining history. It draws visitors for its historic significance, proximity to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, and access to outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and boating.
