About Lakehead

Lakehead is a small, unincorporated community in northern Shasta County, located on the northern shore of Shasta Lake, just off Interstate 5. It developed primarily in the mid-20th century, following the construction of Shasta Dam and the creation of Shasta Lake—the largest reservoir in California.

Originally, the area was sparsely populated by ranchers and loggers. However, after Shasta Lake was formed in the 1940s, Lakehead evolved into a recreation-based community, catering to boating, fishing, camping, and tourism. Its location along the lake and proximity to the Shasta-Trinity National Forest made it a popular destination for both locals and travelers.

Today, Lakehead thrives during the warmer months with resorts, marinas, campgrounds, and vacation cabins, while maintaining a small year-round population. It is known for its scenic beauty, outdoor lifestyle, and easy access to lake-based activities, making it one of Shasta County’s key tourism hubs.
