About Platina

Platina is a tiny, unincorporated community in western Shasta County, nestled in the foothills of the Trinity Mountains. The town’s name reflects the small but historically significant platinum deposits found in the area during the mid-19th century, making it one of the few places in California associated with platinum mining.

Founded during the Gold Rush era, Platina attracted miners hoping to capitalize on local mineral wealth. Though it never grew into a large town, it became known for its rugged terrain and remote location. Over time, the mining activities dwindled, and the community shifted toward ranching and forestry.

Today, Platina remains a quiet and sparsely populated area known for its scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and access to nearby wilderness areas. It is also home to the St. Herman of Alaska Monastery, a notable Orthodox Christian monastic community that draws visitors for spiritual retreats and cultural interest.
